Environmental measures

• Heat transition: In the first half of 2026, the Track business area converted twelve fossil fuel heating systems to climate-friendly alternatives. A total of ten heat pumps and two district heating connections were installed.
• Pilot testing and approval of emissions-reduced building materials: A pilot project for the use of modularly constructed train platforms made from CO₂e-reduced concrete (compared to conventional construction methods) has been in the planning stages at Kestert and Filsen stations since November 2025. The manufacturer is set to begin the prefabrication of the platforms shortly. Additional pilot projects involving the use of emissions-reduced concrete (including platforms, access structures and flooring) are in the preliminary or detailed planning stages and are expected to be put out to tender later in 2026.
• “Railmap for climate-friendly rail infrastructure”: As part of the Railmap, we are taking measures to reduce the greenhouse gas emissions generated during the construction and maintenance of the rail infrastructure. This includes coordinating with the BMV and the Federal Railway Authority (Eisenbahn-Bundesamt; EBA) regarding funding opportunities for emissions-reduced building materials, as well as maintaining close communication with the raw materials industry. In May 2026, construction began on the first rail overpass in Herrenbach using emissions-reduced concrete, for which a grant award notice has been received from the BMV and EBA. Additional pilot projects are currently in the tender and coordination phases. In addition, a pilot project was launched in mid-June 2026 as part of the Kassel Curve new construction line, in which the first regulatory approval steps are being taken with scientific oversight to incorporate various emissions-reduced, cement-free concrete into DB Group’s regulatory framework.
